Eat broccoli sprouts to fight cancer! Not only are the a delicious topping for salad or sandwiches, but scientists at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have discovered that three-day old broccoli sprouts have exceptionally high amounts of a natural cancer-fighting compound. Dr. Paul Talalay and his colleagues, showed that some varieties of vegetables such as broccoli contain substantial quantities of sulforaphane, which supports the uptake of antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E.

Did you know? Freckles and moles are actually sun spots, signs of skin damage. But since you can’t change the past, the next best thing to do is to keep a close watch on them and go to a dermatologist. One simple thing you can do to protect yourself is, you guessed it, sunscreen! Putting on sunscreen at least once a day significantly decreases your risk of getting skin cancer. (Might as well go buy a bottle now, right?)
Once it’s too late, it’s too late, so don’t risk it!

One thing you should know first, however, is that tanning beds are scientifically proven to increase skin cancer risk. If you don’t believe me, ask Google Scholar. If you’re addicted to tanning, a good thing for you to do is try not to use them all throughout May, if you can. You can fight this. You don’t have to be tan to be beautiful.
Anyways!
Ever see those really beautiful dermatologists like Dr. Jane Khoury? You think, “Oh, well she’s a dermatologist. Her skin must be perfect; she can get free botox.” Wrong! Even if some dermatologists get those procedures, the primary reason their skin glows is because they take good care of it! And the first step is really easy. Just put on sunscreen every day. That’s it. Once you get into the habit of putting it on once in the morning, it eliminates the hassle. Breaking into the habit is the hardest part; keeping it is easy. The next thing you can do is eat well and exercise regularly. (And most of my followers already do that! So kudos!)
You should reapply your sunscreen about every two hours, especially when you’re outside for long periods of time, like during the summer. You’re swimming, sweating, and other things that will either remove your sunscreen completely or stop it from working as well as it needs to. So as Nike says, Just do it!
Did you know that 75% of tanning bed users are girls ages 16-29? If you’re part of that demographic, you need to stop as soon as possible if you want to stop doing damage. The damage stops when you stop! So it’s all up to you! Consider this next time you go to hit the tanning bed: One bad sunburn can double your risk of skin cancer. And who said they’re not dangerous?
So how easily do you burn? A lot? A little? Not at all? Even if you’re the type that only tans and never sunburns, that does not mean there’s no risk of skin cancer. All skin types are at risk for getting skin cancer. Period. In fact, not having sunburns as a warning sign to go inside or put on lotion may actually increase your risk! And you wouldn’t even know it until it’s too late.
Have any cute freckles on your body? Those aren’t “just” freckles, they’re actually sun spots; a sign of damage already done by the sun.
Don’t be alarmed, though. Take this as a reminder that it’s never too late for prevention. Young people especially; you have all your lives to change your habits. So why not start now? You’re never too young to take care of your skin. :)

As you may have heard, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation bowed to political pressure from misguided anti-abortion groups, and has announced the end its commendable history of funding cancer screenings and breast health education programs at Planned Parenthood Health Centers.
Whatever your beliefs are towards abortion, the facts in this case are:
- Planned Parenthood has provided approximately 4 million breast exams and referrals for 70,000 mammograms in the last five years.
- No Komen funding ever went towards paying for abortions or birth control. (LA Times)
If you want to voice your frustration with the Komen Foundation, don’t just huff and puff and make an angry facebook post about it. Consider making a donation to Planned Parenthood and encourage your friends and family to follow your lead.
If, conversely, you approve of the Komen Foundation decision, by all means show your support by making a donation to the Komen Foundation HERE. Both groups have done wonderful work in educating patients and preventing cancer, and neither should be penalized as a result of this unfortunate news.
Would you think twice about eating there now?
It’s not all about calories and weight loss: healthy eating is about keeping you cancer free, heart disease free, diabetes free and optimizing your chances of living a healthy, long life. Not every state requires a label (this one is from California), but the same foods are available EVERYWHERE.
Be smart. Be prepared. Learn about the foods you’re consuming.

Wow. Even more reason to not like it.
#19 - Small boobs & breast cancer
Maple Syrup (Grade A)
- Fends off colds
- Boosts immune system
- Rich in zinc and manganese
- Fights inflammation
- Keeps white blood cells healthy
- Prevents cancer with polyphenols
Maple syrup contains a lot of sugar, so don’t go overboard! Having too much maple syrup can actually do worse for your body. So limit it to just a drizzle over some whole-wheat pancakes! A great way to sneak it in with your kids!
Tea
- Has many anti-cancer properties
- A warm teabag placed on the eye can cure sties and pink eye
- Modulates cell activity that fight infection
- Chamomile tea on the skin can soothe eczema
Tea is the go-to for sickness! It’s warm, soothing, and promotes a healthy immune system. Just beware of too much! Too much of caffeine in caffeinated teas can make you lethargic and fatigued. Also try to avoid drinking tea close to meal times because it can inhibit the absorption of iron, which helps red blood cells carry oxygen throughout your body.
Baking Soda
- Whitens teeth
- Soothes razor burn and treats acne
- Reduces the harmful acidity of bacteria
Widely known for its use in freshening up smelly fridges, it does wonders to your skin! Mix some baking soda with water to make a paste and it will help with the above listed problems! However, when it comes to acne, the paste will not work for under-the-skin pimples.
Vinegar
- Soothes mild sunburn
- Reduces inflammation
- Removes build-up of products when applied to hair
- A natural disinfectant
Although vinegar is great for soothing sunburn, prevention is key to preventing skin cancer that excessive sunburn can cause! So be sure to apply sunscreen when going outside, but keep in mind that vinegar will help if you do happen to get a burn! To remove product build-up in hair, dilute some vinegar with water in a spray bottle and spray onto hair. Leave in for 3-5 minutes, then wash out. Do this a few times a week for clean, shiny hair!
Cinnamon
- Lowers cholesterol
- Promotes proper insulin function
- Lowers diabetes risk and can help lower blood sugar levels in diabetics
- Acts as an antibacterial that can fight bad breath
Cinnamon is a great spice that should be integrated into everyone’s diet, especially for diabetics or those at risk for diabetes! Sprinkle it on your peanut butter sandwich, into your coffee, or bake it into your baked goods! Cinnamon gum is a great alternative and can fight the bacteria that causes bad breath!

5 Spices That Help Fight Cancer and Other Diseases
- Tumeric: Who can resist the gorgeous yellow color of this cancer-fighting spice? Lately turmeric has been the darling of the spice world as researchers have discovered that, not only does it fight cancer, but contains an entire spectrum of other health benefits, including inflammation-fighting compounds called curcuminoids. These compounds may help prevent Alzheimer’s, arthritis, and carpal tunnel syndrome. When used topically turmeric has been known to help heal skin infections.
- Ginger: For centuries, grandma has been prescribing this knobby little root for an upset tummy but we now know that it holds anti-inflammatory properties, shows promise in treating cancer, osteoarthritis and, when used topically, rheumatoid arthritis. It can be used as an appetite stimulant, and a treatment for nausea, whether legit (flu) or not-so-legit (hangover).
- Cinnamon: Besides being a yummy addition to coffee, cinnamon protects against Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Derived from tree bark, this wonderful spice stimulates the bodies circulatory systems. Just half a teaspoon taken daily lowers blood glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. It also counteracts congestion, may be useful treating osteoarthritis and improves blood circulation.
- Cayenne Pepper: Arriba! Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, yet another cancer preventative. When used in mass it can cause heartburn but a little sprinkled onto everyday foods should be enough for you to see the benefits. Cayenne peppers are full of beta carotene, other antioxidants and immune boosters and helps to build healthy mucous membranes tissues -our first level of defense against bacteria and viruses.
- Garlic: No surprise here. The stinking rose is one of the most potent weapons in preventing cancer, particularly colon cancer. Containing the photochemical allicin, garlic stimulates the production of cancer-fighting enzymes. Daily garlic consumption can lower total cholesterol and triglyceride levels by 10 percent and has the added benefit of keeping vampires at bay
Don’t be selfish. If you choose to smoke, that’s your choice. But don’t force your cancer sticks on the rest of us, because we didn’t choose to be like you. Go somewhere private. Don’t drag the rest of us into your unhealthy activity.
Thank God for some of the new laws about smoking in public places.
